Hirsutism
Understanding Hirsutism: Embracing the Journey to Self-Acceptance, Health & Empowerment
Hirsutism is a common endocrine disorder in women and people AFAB that causes excessive hair growth in areas of the body that depend on androgens such as the face, neck, chest, stomach, lower back, buttocks & thighs. The hair itself is often dark, coarse & stiff in nature.
This hair growth often arises due to an imbalance of hormones, known as androgens, or an increased follicular sensitivity to these hormones. It can also be a symptom of underlying conditions such as adrenal gland disorders and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), a common condition affecting the ovaries which occurs in 1 in every 10 women and people AFAB in the UK. Of this 1 in 10, 70% are affected by hirsutism.
